Since the foundation in 1919 the University of Latvia with its more than 14 000 students, 13 faculties and over 20 research institutes and independent study centres, is one of the largest comprehensive and leading research universities in the Baltics. After thoroughly examining the existing infrastructure it was understood that current buildings and laboratories are not up to date with demands of modern study environment. A decision was taken to build a completely new, modern Academic centre in Torņakalns which eventually would house all the faculties and institutes, promoting interdisciplinary approach to studies, sharing infrastructure and creating a mingle among students, academic personnel and researchers.
In 2013 the foundation stone was laid for the first building – the House of Nature, which was open in September 2015 and currently houses three faculties: Faculty of Geography and Earth Sciences, Faculty of Chemistry and Faculty of Biology. The building speaks for itself – live climbing plants provide shade to the building, rooftop greenhouses, plant beds outside and live plants inside create a perfect study environment for the students of natural sciences. Paintings by Cristina Luisa Avotina, which can be found throughout the building, bring to life the different fields students’ study.
In 2017 the construction work for the second building – the House of Science was begun, and it is expected to be finished in autumn 2018. Different interesting solutions have been used in this building, for example, anti-vibration floor for precise optical measurements for the needs of UL Laser Centre and a wide indoor atrium, the central stairs of which will be possible to use also as an open auditorium. This building will house several institutes and also two faculties: Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Physics and Mathematics.
Work on the third building – the House of Letters, is expected to begin in 2018 and it will be home to several institutes and five faculties: Faculty of History and Philosophy, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Education, Psychology and Art, Faculty of Humanities and Faculty of Business, Management and Economics. It is planned that in future, the Academic Campus will also have modern student and academic personnel housing, a sports centre, technology centre, conference centre and together with other projects, for example, the Rail Baltic train station, it will become a new vibrant centre of Riga.
